dated December 12, 1950: Sardar Patel ill
India's Deputy premier and Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai
Patel, had taken ill in Delhi and he was being looked after by a
panel of specialists. A bulletin issued on the morning of
December 11 said, ``Sardar Patel has been making satisfactory
progress; he is feeling fairly restful. In order to give him the
benefit of a milder climate, it is proposed to shift him to
Bombay.''
Nobel for Bunche, Russel, Faulkner!
The 50th anniversary of the Nobel Foundation saw prizes being
awarded by King Gustav of Sweden to winners selected for the
coveted honour. The prize for Peace went to Dr. Ralph Bunche, a
46-year-old American Negro, grandson of a former slave. Dr.
Bunche, who had played an important role as mediator in
Palestine, became the first-ever Black to win a Nobel, and was
one of the youngest-ever awardees. Dr. Bunche lauded the
significance of the Peace Prize, and expressed his appreciation
saying it was given not only to him as an individual, but through
him to all coloured people.
The Prize for Literature for 1950 went to the British scientist
and philosopher, Dr. Bertrand Russel (Earl Russel) for his
`versatile, important writings in which he has shown himself to
be an apostle of humanity and freedom of thought. In 1949 no
candidate garnered sufficient votes to win the Prize for
Literature. That deferred Prize was now given to William
Faulkner, American novelist. Faulkner was commended for his
`vigorous and independent artistic contributions to recent
American fiction.''
