CBI court asks Hindujas to appear on Jan. 19

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 12. A special court for CBI cases today rejected the plea of the three Hinduja brothers that they have a right to be heard before issue of process in the chargesheet filed against them in the Bofors payoffs case.

Dismissing their applications, the special judge, Mr. Ajit Bharihoke, took cognisance of the supplementary chargesheet filed by the CBI and ordered issue of summons to the three brothers - Messrs. G.P. Hinduja, S.P. Hinduja and P.P. Hinduja - for their appearance in the court on January 19, 2001.

In his order, the judge said, ``In view of the judgments cited by counsel for the accused persons and the ones relied upon by the investigating agency, I am of the view that you (accused) have no right to be heard at this stage.''

``The court prima facie found sufficient material on record to take note of the chargesheet. I take cognisance of the chargesheet and summon the three brothers for January 19,'' he said. The court also consolidated the two chargesheets so far filed in the case and ordered that all the accused would now be tried together.
