Prasanna scores over Karthik
By Raghunandan Gokhale
MUMBAI, DEC. 13. R.S. Prasanna (5.5) of Tamil Nadu and Eesha
Karvade (5.5) of Maharashtra emerged as leaders in their
respective categories after the sixth round of National sub-
junior chess championship being held at Andheri Sports Complex
here on Wednesday.
Prasanna scored an attacking victory over Karthik Viswanathan (4)
of Maharashtra while Eesha exhibited excellent defensive
technique against teammate Amruta Mokal (4).
R. Siddharth (5) of Capa Chess Academy held top seeded M.R.
Venkatesh (5) of TN to a well fought draw in the Moscow attack of
Sicilian defence. Top seeded girl Baisakhi Das' challenge
practically ended when she was shocked by Soumya Swaminathan
(4.5) of Maharashtra in Sicilian defence.
Karthik, who had played an attacking game in the fifth round to
surprise Vaibhav Saxena, was at the receiving end against
Prasanna. The Chennai boy employed Grunfeld defence and faced
5.Qb3 system from Karthik. However Karthik made a mistake of
launching an offensive with his own king in the Center.
Prasanna was quick to target the white king and soon the heavy
black pieces trapped the white monarch in a web. Karthik resigned
on 26th move when face with an unavoidable checkmate.
Sayantan Dutta (4) of GNCA suffered the same fate when he
committed similar error of neglecting the safety of his own king.
Second seeded Deepan Chakravorty (5) who represents TN needed no
more invitations to launch a whirlwind offensive which forced
Sayantan to surrender in 20 moves of English attack in Sicilian
defence.
Eesha Karvade defended well against Amruta Mokal's (4) attempted
attack from the black side of Sicilian Kan defence. ``Once the
queens got exchanged, I had a clear win,'' explained the winner
after her triumph in 57 moves.
R. Mahima (5) of TN was at her lethal best while handing over a
25 move loss to higher rated Kruttika Nadig (4) of Maharashtra.
Kruttika resigned when she found that her bishop was getting
trapped against Mahima's well coordinated pieces in Italian Game.
Overnight joint leader Anuradha Beniwal (5) of Haryana fell
behind after drawing with second seeded Tania Sachdev (4.5) of
Delhi in 28 moves of Sicilian Pelikan defence.
