City to have new model toilets soon
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, DEC. 14. The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad has
identified 154 sites in the city for constructing new model
urinals with provision of running water at a cost of Rs. 85,000
each. Work on these toilets will be taken up shortly.
The new models, a replica of which has been erected on the
premises of MCH head office, can accommodate four persons at a
time, says Mr. Jagannadha Rao, Assistant Commissioner (Health).
This apart, in what is being seen an admission of its inability
to maintain public toilets and urinals, the Corporation has also
promised to construct as many toilets provided people come
forward to maintain `Pay and use' toilets.
Even the MCH Commissioner, Dr. P.K. Mohanty, vouches for the
same. "If you promise to maintain them by adopting the `Pay and
use' policy, we have no problem in constructing them", he says.
Although the Corporation does not admit that the maintenance is
poor even in the 32 `Pay and use' toilets being run by the Sulabh
International, the spate of complaints from public continues.
The situation in and around the 353 open toilets is worse. Not
only are they dirty and stinking, but they are an embarrassment
for women walking along the road. Mr. Rao says once the new model
toilets are in place, the open toilets will be phased out.
