Lt.Governor's ultimatum to unity

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 14.

Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor, Mr. Vijai Kapoor, today categorically told a delegation of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association that all polluting units have to ensure adherence to the emission norms specified in the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, or face closure.

He appealed to the good sense of the associations and individual owners to take steps voluntarily to meet environmental standards. All defaulting units would be taken to task through closure and prosecution if found to be violating these norms by teams constituted for this purpose. There could be no let up in implementing the Supreme Court orders for closure of polluting units.

The delegation informed the Lt.Governor that they held an emergency meeting during which members assured that they would comply with Government orders in letter and spirit. The service stations, they said, would now instal effluent treatment plants for treating discharge of grease and such pollutants. They would also insulate the generator sets with silencers and construct chimneys and exhausts to channelise gaseous emissions.

They pointed that closure of service stations would be against the interest of citizens who are used to such facilities near their residences. Mr. Kapoor said that service stations would be allowed to operate without causing any dislocation to the public provided clean processes and the above mentioned pollution reducing measures are implemented.
