Senior Major Generals overlooked in promotions

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, DEC. 15. The Pakistan Chief Executive, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, has once again overlooked seniority and promoted three Major Generals to the rank of Lieutenant General, superseding seven senior Major Generals.

The weekly, Friday Times, has reported that the newly-promoted Lieutenant Generals will take up key command and staff positions. They are Maj. Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hayat, Chief Instructor of the National Defence College; Maj. Gen. Abdul Qadir Baloch, Director- General, Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, and Maj. Gen. Tariq Waseem Ghazi, Commandant, Command and Staff College, Quetta.

On November 7, Gen. Musharraf appointed Air Marshal Mushaf Mir Amir, new Chief of the Air Staff overlooking five seniors.

The new Chief of Air Staff, ranked sixth on the seniority list of Air Marshals, was elevated to the coveted post just 10 days after he had been promoted Air Marshal. The five superseded Air Marshals have resigned.

The paper, quoting sources, has said Gen. Musharraf did not take time in accepting their resignations. The new air chief was named two weeks before the retirement of Air Chief Marshal Parvez Mehdi Qureshi.

With the scheduled retirement of four three-star generals by December-end, at least four more Major Generals would be promoted Lieutenant Generals.
