Five of family killed, cash, jewels looted

AHMEDABAD, DEC. 15. Five members of a jeweller's family, were brutally murdered and cash and jewelry looted in Surat this morning.

The Minister of State for Home, Mr. Haren Pandya, immediately constituted a three-member committee of senior police officers including the Additional Director General of Police and Home Secretary, Mr. K. Nityanandan, to inquire into the incident.

Recounting what one of the survivors, the daughter of the murdered jeweller, Mr. Prakash Jain, told the police, Mr. Nityanandan said two dark complexioned persons aged between 21 and 26 years were believed to be behind the crime.

The residence of Mr. Jain was behind the jewellery shop. The two persons are believed to have entered the house though the door which had been left open by one of the daughters when she had gone out in the morning to collect milk. Mr. Jain and his wife were killed in the front room and when their three children, who rushed in on hearing the commotion, were also done to death. Among the killed was a 21-year-old pregnant daughter of the Jains who had come to her parents' house for delivery, and two sons aged 14 and 12 years.

The assailants were busy collecting the booty from the jewellery shop even when the other daughter returned. Seeing her the assailants made good their escape leaving a part of the cash and jewelry behind.
