Five of family killed, cash, jewels looted
By Our Special Correspondent
AHMEDABAD, DEC. 15. Five members of a jeweller's family, were
brutally murdered and cash and jewelry looted in Surat this
morning.
The Minister of State for Home, Mr. Haren Pandya, immediately
constituted a three-member committee of senior police officers
including the Additional Director General of Police and Home
Secretary, Mr. K. Nityanandan, to inquire into the incident.
Recounting what one of the survivors, the daughter of the
murdered jeweller, Mr. Prakash Jain, told the police, Mr.
Nityanandan said two dark complexioned persons aged between 21
and 26 years were believed to be behind the crime.
The residence of Mr. Jain was behind the jewellery shop. The two
persons are believed to have entered the house though the door
which had been left open by one of the daughters when she had
gone out in the morning to collect milk. Mr. Jain and his wife
were killed in the front room and when their three children, who
rushed in on hearing the commotion, were also done to death.
Among the killed was a 21-year-old pregnant daughter of the Jains
who had come to her parents' house for delivery, and two sons
aged 14 and 12 years.
The assailants were busy collecting the booty from the jewellery
shop even when the other daughter returned. Seeing her the
assailants made good their escape leaving a part of the cash and
jewelry behind.
