New road underbridge near Rail Nilayam almost ready
By V. Geetanath
HYDERABAD, DEC. 21. The new road underbridge coming up near the
Rail Nilayam has almost been completed and will be thrown open to
traffic once the approach roads are laid.
Being built jointly by the South Central Railway and the
Government at a cost of Rs. 4.99 crores, the underbridge should
ease traffic congestion. The project was taken up as the
adjoining old underbridge built way back in 1886 was unable to
handle the increasing traffic on the stretch which links Tarnaka
and beyond.
The new one was constructed using the `box pushing' technique
without disturbing the movement of rail traffic on the five lines
over the bridge. But, once the underbridge is open, it perhaps
can ease hold-ups only to a certain extent, feel many regular
road-users. There are two points where a large number of vehicles
are either forced to halt for a while or move at a snail's pace.
One is the old underbridge near the Rail Nilayam and another
underbridge just a few meters away leading to Mettuguda. While
traffic will ease at the first point, the second stage remains as
it is. "All the vehicles will surely come to a grinding halt when
they reach the second point," points out a road-user.
This necessitates construction of another underbridge at the
second point (road leading to Mettuguda) and also widen the road
as the stretch is narrow till St. Anthony's church. However, for
the traffic cops the new underbridge is one headache less as they
can now concentrate near the second point where all the
convergence and frayed tempers take place.
