Earthquake in Kerala
Sir, - To most of our people in Kerala, it was a surprise as well
as a shock when they faced the earthquake on December 12. They
never thought they would face such a situation while in this
State. It was because most of us do not have any idea about the
possibility of a tremor here. As per the earthquake map, the
whole of Kerala is in zone III with more chances of a tremor and
everyone will be surprised to know that the possibility is much
more than in Latur which has a position in zone IV. The
unexpected tremor luckily has not caused any loss of life, but
has caused financial loss to many.
As a registered Forum of General Insurance Customers, we are
inspecting a lot of General Insurance policies for giving advice.
It is surprising to find that about 70 per cent of general
insurance customers have opted out of earthquake cover from their
policies to save a little money. All the General Insurance
companies are having extension of earthquake cover for a
negligible premium of Rs. 10 to Rs. 20 per lakh of insured amount
per year. The coverage will take care of the financial loss of
the insured in the event of any earthquake.
