Film Review: ''Kandaen Seethaiyai''
VIKRAM AND Soundaraya have done a neat job in S.S.S.Films
``Kandaen Seethaiyai'', which narrates the strength of character
of a wife who makes up her mind to save her husband by agreeing
to be a surrogate mother. But enough care has not been taken with
regard to screenplay.
A computer engineer (Vikram) who does research work for his
employer marries the servant maid (Soundarya) of their colony
under peculiar circumstances. This makes the person who is to get
married to the maid jealous, and he ruins the scientist's pet
project before it is shown to an invited foreign audience. But
the employer thinks that Vikram has sold the project to a
competing firm for big money and Vikram is thrown out of the
office immediately.
In a confused state the young engineer while riding on his
motorcycle, meets with an accident. Without money the hospital
authorities refuse to treat him. A surgery has to be performed
and Soundarya, the wife of the engineer, is helpless as she
cannot dream of mobilising so much money (Rs. 8 lakhs).
A young doctor from the hospital suggests to the new bride that
if she agrees to bear the child of a wealthy person he would be
willing to give the money to save her husband. Soundarya agrees
to go ahead and thus saves her husband's life. The story gains
momentum only after this incident but the director has not
concentrated much to sustain the tempo.
The agony of the husband and the wife, how they react to the
accusation from friends and relatives and the position of the
wife in society after the bold step she had taken, is told
without much pep. The climax has a little twist in it but that
too is an expected one.
Vikram must have been given more frames as he has proved his
mettle in the film `Sethu' itself. Soundarya bears the film on
her shoulders and has lived the character with maturity.
Vivek should refrain from doing spoofs on senior artistes and on
people like poet Bharathi who is shown as if he is running with a
booty without knowing who the owner of the money is. It is time
that a good artiste like Vivek tried to provide healthy humour
like Nagesh, Chandrababu or Balaiya.
The title song sung by Harish Ragavender is melodious and all the
other songs are also pleasing. The dialogues are crisp and the
camera work is noteworthy. Produced by S. Sundaram and S.
Jayaseelan, the film is directed by Kranthikumar.
S. R. ASHOK KUMAR
