dated December 22, 1950: Peace in Nepal
In a statement on Nepal, the Prime Minister reiterated India's
stand with regard to King Tribhuvan and said: ``In the interest
of peace as well as stability, King Tribhuvan Bikram Singh,
should continue as the King of Nepal. We feel that in all the
circumstances, this is the right course and any discontinuance of
recognition would produce many complications and would come in
the way of a peaceful settlement.''
Mr. Nehru told Parliament on December 21 that the Prime Minister
of Nepal had written to the Government of India saying that he
was preparing a proclamation addressed to the people of Nepal
announcing constitutional reforms and other matters very soon.
Gen. Eisenhower appeals for unity
``The Supreme Commander of the West European defence, General
Eisenhower told a press conference in Denver (Colorado) on
December 20, that ``the situation these days is not nearly as
dark as in the spring of 1942.'' Appealing for unity at home, the
General said, ``I am extremely hopeful that America has reached
the lowest point of disunity and it's going back up.''
Gen. Eisenhower said the responsibility of any nation which
undertook global warfare must not be minimised. Without
mentioning any country he said, ``If they are choosing global
war they are not showing the wisdom they have shown in the past.
I see no reason for the United States to act in an atmosphere of
hysterical fear. It is silly to be too frightened or indeed too
belligerent. A calm and determined America can get this job
done.''
