Group insurance for schoolchildren

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, DEC. 22. A group insurance scheme for schoolchildren covering 1.10 crore students from first to tenth standard will be launched from June 2001.

The premium of Rs. one per student amounting to Rs. 1.10 crores will be shared by the Government and voluntary agencies.

The Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Mr. H. Vishwanath, told presspersons here today that the novel scheme, the first of its kind, would cover all government schools.

The Government would, however, insist on private schools too to introduce the scheme.

Mr. Vishwanath said the Government would pay 50 per cent of the premium amount and the rest would be borne by voluntary agencies.

He appealed to NGOs and voluntary organisations to come forward to help in this good cause.

He said Rs. 25,000 would be paid in case of death and Rs. 20,000 in case of major injuries. In case of minor injuries, the amount would be paid according to the nature of injury.

Mr. Vishwanath said that a private insurance company had come forward to take up the scheme.

He said the insurance certificate along with free bag, textbooks and a set of uniforms would be given to the students at the time of school admission in June.
