Election to 147 local bodies on Jan. 28

BANGALORE, DEC. 23. The State Election Commission has decided to
hold elections on January 28 to four municipal corporations, 31
city municipal councils (CMC), 76 town municipal councils (TMC)
and 36 town panchayats (TP).
Giving the calendar of events, the State Election Commissioner,
Mr. G. Muniyappa, said that the notification of election would be
issued on January 8. The last date for filing nominations is
January 15 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is
January 18. Scrutiny of applications will take place on January
16.
Elections to the 147 local bodies will be held between 7 a.m. and
5 p.m. on January 28 and counting of votes will take place on
January 29 from 8 a.m. at the headquarters of he local bodies.
Mr. Muniyappa said the Election Commission had made elaborate
arrangements for the polls. Of the 7,768 polling stations in the
State, 1,992 had been identified as hyper sensitive and 2,733 as
sensitive. In all, 33,900 polling personnel would be deployed.
The number of electorate, he said, was 64,73,770 with the number
of women being 31,41,322.
Of the 245 wards in the four corporations, 89 wards have been
reserved for women. Reservation for women in CMCs are 378 wards
out of 1,013; 683 wards out of 1,800 TMCs and 254 of the 629 TP
wards.
The four municipal corporations going to the polls are of Mysore,
Belgaum, Hubli, Dharwad and Gulbarga. The local bodies are
Bangalore Urban - 1 CMC and 1 TMC; Bangalore Rural - 3 CMCs and 5
TMCs; Chitradurga - 1 CMC and 2 TMCs; Davanagere - 2 CMCs and 1
TP; Kolar - 2 CMCs and 5 TMCs; Shimoga - 2 CMCs, 2 TMCs and 1 TP;
Tumkur - 1 CMC and 5 TMCs; Mysore - 3 TMCs and 1 TP;
Chamarajanagar - 1 CMC and 2 TMCs; Chikmagalur - 1 CMC, 2 TMCs
and 1 TP; Hassan - 1 CMC, 4 TMCs and 1 TP; Mandya - 1 CMC, 3 TMCs
and 1 TP; Kodagu - 1 TMC; Belgaum - 2 CMCs, 7 TMCs and 6 TPs;
Bijapur - 1 CMC, 4 TMCs and 1 TP; Bagalkot - 2 CMCs, 5 TMCs and 3
TPs; Dharwad - 1 TMC and 3 TPs; Gadag - 1 CMC, 3 TMCs and 4 TPs;
Haveri - 1 CMC, 4 TMCs and 2 TPs; Uttara Kannada - 3 CMCs, 2 TMCs
and 3 TPs; Gulbarga - 7 TMCs and 1 TP; Bellary - 2 CMCs, 1 TMC
and 5 TPs; Bidar - 1 CMC and 4 TMCs; Raichur - 1 CMC, 2 TMCs and
2 TPs.
Mr. Muniyappa said the government had notified the reservation of
seats and the same had been sent to Deputy Commissioners. He
hoped that the Government would not effect any change in the
reservation anymore.
Asked whether voting machines would be used in the polls, he said
the Government had rejected the commission's proposal to use
voting machines.
