Mastery to the fore

IT'S THE artistic skills that attract you more than the products themselves. One glance at them, the wonderful creations beckon you to have a second look and ultimately lure you to own them. The passion with which the artisan has created and the hard work that has gone into the making leaves you in awe.

Enter the Crafts Mela-2001, now on at Hastakala Bhavan in Musheerabad, and on display is a repertoire of skills of artisans coming from various parts of the State and the country. Indeed, a quiet walk around the place can be as exciting as one can fathom.

You name it and they are there. Wood carvings, stone carvings, tribal crafts, durries, cane and bamboo furniture, jewellery, finely woven sarees -- an amazing range from Gadwal, Pochampally, Narayanpet, Dharmavaram, and Siddipet -- and dresses and more.

Created in the sleepy villages of the State, these finest of the handicrafts are in tune with the current tastes.

"The idea of the Mela is to create a market for the artisans and display the best of handicrafts at one single venue for people", says R. Prabhakar Rao, Senior Manager (Development and Exhibition), A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd.

There's a live demo also of the artisans. As the nimble hands play around, one can see the beautiful products taking shape. The exhibition is open to public from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday (including holidays and Sundays) till January 7.
