Protest against shifting of Indian Embassy
BERLIN, DEC. 24. About 90 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) staged a
demonstration in Bonn to protest against the shifting of the
Indian Embassy from the erstwhile German capital to Munich.
The demonstration was held outside the premises of the office,
which was closed late last year, and a memorandum highlighting
the demands of the NRIs in North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW), the most
populous State in Germany, was submitted to Indian officials.
The NRIs, under the aegis of the German Province of the World
Malayalees Council and a few NRI organisations like the India
Unity Forum, have been agitating for quite some time demanding
that the Embassy be reopened.
In the memorandum, the German Province president, Mr. Mathew
Jacob, wanted the Indian Government to review the decision saying
there was ``no justification to close down the Bonn office from
political, economic or cultural point of view.'' He referred to
the increasing importance of Bonn as a North-South centre and as
a home to several UN organisations. Fifty per cent of an
estimated 50,000 Indians in Germany lived in NRW.
