Maulana's ultimatum

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, DEC. 24 The military government is gearing to block a march by a religious leader who has threatened to storm Islamabad with three lakh volunteers in support of the demand for enforcement of the Shariat (Islamic rule) in the country.

The chief of Tanzeemul Akhwan, Maulana Akram Awan, intends to take out the march on Eid (December 26), and stay put till the demand is met. The Government has said it would deal sternly with him and his followers. It has been made clear that no political activity or rally would be allowed in view of the ban on such activities.

However, it is to be seen if the Maulana is prepared to agree for a symbolic march. He is a powerful religious leader and enjoys support of organisations like the Jamaat-e-Islam (JI). The Interior Minister, Lt. Gen. (retd) Moinuddin Haider, has directed officials to negotiate with him.
