Left parties ready for stir

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 24. The nine left parties are gearing up for an agitation again as they believe that yet another hike in power tariff is in the offing.

At a press conference on Sunday, representatives of these parties contended that the Electricity Regulatory Authority chairman had clearly hinted at another steep hike in the tariff in the next few months.

Speaking on behalf of these parties, Mr. S. Sudhakar Reddy, CPI State secretary, claimed that the anti-power tariff hike stir was not given up by them and but was only slowed down. He said the first phase of the agitation brought about an awareness among the masses on the need to resist the tariff burden. If the tariff is raised again, a prolonged agitation would be carried out, Mr. Reddy said. The CPI(M) State secretary, Mr. B. V. Raghavulu, Mr. Y. Sambasiva Rao (CPI-ML-New Democracy), Mr. M. V. Prasad (CPI-ML-Janashakthi), Mr. G. Vijayakumar (CPI-ML-New Initiative) and Mr. Murahari (SUCI) also participated in the press meet.

The left party leaders said the agitation was not abruptly called off on August 28 in the wake of police firing on agitators as the decision to end the fast by the leaders was taken earlier.

Mr.Sudhakar Reddy said Left parties had decided to participate in the probe by the CID into the police firing as the fresh investigation was taking place under the directions of the High Court.
