State TV awards announced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 24. `School Diary' has won the State TV
Award for the Best Tele-serial of 1999. Its director, Mohammed
Kutty, has been chosen best director of the year.
`Ariyathe', produced by P.P. Jayaraj and directed by Kukku
Parameswaran, has been adjudged the best tele-film. M. R.
Gopakumar (`Pulari', `Balyakala Smaranakal') and Anila Sreekumar
(`Draupadi') have been selected the best actor and actress. For
its ``remarkable freshness'', `Oru Prathyeka Paripadi', made by
Tanu and Manu Balak, has been given the Special Jury Award.
Fourteen tele-films, 15 tele-serials, 37 non-fiction works and
three articles had competed for the honours.
Announcing the awards at a press conference here today, the
chairman of the fiction jury, Mr. M.S. Sathyu, observed that
there were very few good ones among the entries.
``The sound department of Malayalam TV works needs improvement.
However, there was severe competition for photography and music
prizes.''
The awards in the other categories are as follows: Second best
tele-serial - `Balyakala Smaranakal', directed by Lenin
Rajendran; second best tele-film - `Swathanthryathinte
Chirakadiyochakal'; best script-writer - Kukku Parameswaran
(`Ariyathe'); story-writer - Akbar Kakkattil (`School Diary');
supporting actor - Jagannathan (`Draupadi', `School Diary');
supporting actress - Priyaranjini (`Swathanthryathinte
Chirakadiyochakal'); child artiste - Aparna (`Balyakala
Smaranakal'); cameraman - T.G. Sreekumar (`Draupadi'); editor -
Madhu Kainakari (`School Diary')
Best music director - Thankaraj (`School Diary'); sound
recordist - C.R. Chandran (`Ankappurappadu'), art director -
Radhakrishnan (`Ankappurappadu'); best documentaries -
`Snehadeepam', directed by Ajith M. Gopinath, and `Plastic,
Plastic, Plastic', directed by C.L. Jaya Joseraj; best director
of a documentary - Vinod Mankara (`Hridayapoorvam Sooryakanthi');
best programme on topical and social issues - `Theruvil
Ottappedunna Sthreetvam', directed by Neelan; best programme for
children - `Changathikoottam', directed by Asha Joseph; best
compere - Mini Sukumar (`Innathe Sthreeyude Pratichaya');
commentator - Vasudev (`Kannadi 293'); news presenter -
Rajeshwari Mohan (Doordarshan News); best criticism on TV
programmes - no entry has been selected;
Special jury awards (non-fiction) - `Haritham', directed by T.V.
Sunitha, and `Innathe Sthreeyude Prathichaya', directed by Lean
B. Jasmas.
The Cultural Affairs Minister, Mr. T.K. Ramakrishnan, the
chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, Mr. Shaji N.
Karun, Prof. Sreevarahom Balakrishnan and Mr. C. Gouridasan Nair,
chairmen of the non-fiction and TV criticism juries, and
committee members, including Mr. G.S. Panicker, Mr.
Bhasurachandran, Mr. Satheesh Babu Payyannur, Ms. Rosemary, Mr.
B.D. Dattan, Mr. V.S. Rajesh and Mr. T.P. Sasthamangalam, were
also present at the press meet.
