PM & Ram mandir

Sir, - Mr. Asghar Ali Engineer in his article ``the PM, secularism & Ram mandir'' (TheHindu,Dec. 19) has conveniently chided Mr. Vajpaye for his controversial statement.

After all, Mr. Vajpayee is candidly speaking out his mind which he never changed right from the beginning of the Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid issue. He has been consistent in relocating the Masjid and advising the Muslims of Ayodhya to hand over the disputed place to Hindus for construction of a mandir. He started this issue much before the demolition of the masjid. Meanwhile the most heinous crime of demolition took place thanks to the incompetent handling of the issue by the Central Government headed by Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao, supported by the most adventurous State Government of U.P. headed by Mr. Kalyan Singh.

Right or wrong there is no chance of masjid being rebuilt on the debris. It is time for us to come out with bold alternatives.

Sir, - When the country is facing serious internal and external threats, militancy, poverty and many other social evils, it is sad that major political parties are indulging in religious wrangles, which are irrevelant today. Colossal amounts of public money and time are wasted when Parliament proceedings were stalled in the name of religion.

Whether temples and idols were razed to the ground centuries ago or a masjid a few years ago, it is unpardonable to revive it up now. The ruling and opposition parties can once for all seal the vexed problem, by constructing a public-friendly hospital or an educational institution at the disputed site in the name of Ram and Allah which can benefit all classes of people.

Revathi Laxman,

Tirupati
