Dheerendra Gopal passes away

BANGALORE, DEC. 25. The senior Kannada actor and theatre figure, Mr. Dheerendra Gopal, died of a heart attack at his residence in Harihar on Monday. He was 59. He is survived by his wife Sunandamma, daughter Vidyavathi and two sons, Narendra Babu and Sudheendra. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at the Hindu Rudrabhoomi in Harihar.

Mr. Gopal's first film appearance was in Naagarahavu a quarter of a century ago. Over the years, he acted in over 180 Kannada films and became popular for his role as politician-villain. He released 300 on political satires on audio cassettes, that became popular.

A recipient of the Karnataka Nataka Academy Award and the Rajyotsava Award, he was a lover of theatre and acted in hundreds of plays. His roles in the plays, Tippu Sultan and Mudukana Maduve, brought him acclaim.

Mr. Gopal's health deteriorated a year ago after a severe attack of jaundice. Recently, he completed the shooting for a movie Anjali Geetanjali.

Dr. Y.Nagappa, MLA, Mr. H.Shivappa, former minister, Ms. Jalaja Naik, MLC, and Mr. Revana Siddappa, President of the Harihar Town Municipality, were among those paid their last respects to the departed actor.

The Chief Minister, Mr.S.M.Krishna, who condoled the death of Dheerendra Gopal, said it as a big loss to the Kannada stage and cinema.
