Commercial vehicle sales fall
NEW DELHI, DEC. 25. A southward trend in sales of medium and
heavy commercial vehicles pulled down the overall sales of
commercial vehicles by 9.5 per cent to 88,727 units in April-
November even as light commercial vehicles sector kept its flag
flying with 10.4 per cent increase in sales.
Medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales fell 20.67 per cent of
49,894 units in first eight months of current fiscal as compared
to 62,900 units sold in the same period last year.
Telco suffered most of the industry recession with sales falling
by 25 per cent to 31,451 units in the period under reference
while Ashok Leyland sales slid 11.5 per cent to 18,367 units,
according to latest flash figures released by Society of Indian
Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) here.
Market leader Telco's share slipped three percentage points to 63
per cent in first eight months while rival Ashok Leyland gained
Telco's loss to notch 36.8 per cent market share.
In light commercial vehicle segment, Telco led the bandwagon with
over 10 per cent increase in sales to 24,038 units as against
21,767 units sold in first eight months of 1999-2000.
Bajaj tempo sales rose 23.8 per cent to 2,147 while Eicher Motors
saw a 27.28 per cent increase in sales to 4,973 units.
Total light commercial vehicle sales jacked up by 10.4 per cent
to 38,833 units as compared to 35,166 units.
Swaraj Mazda sales rose by 43.8 per cent at 3,122 units as
against 2,171 units.
Ashok Leyland's sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicle
dropped by 15.8 per cent to 2,325 units in November compared to
2,762 units.
While Telco's medium and commercial vehicle sales fell by 26.9
per cent to 3,871 units in November and its light commercial
vehicle sales rose by 5.8 per cent to 2,727 units.
