Keralotsavam to open tomorrow

THRISSUR, DEC. 26. All arrangements have been completed for the
four-day sports-cultural extravaganza, State Keralotsavam 2000,
scheduled to be held here on Thursday, in which 3,500
participants from 14 districts are expected to participate.
According to an official release, the Power and Cooperation
Minister, Mr. S. Sarma, will inaugurate the Keralotsvam
here at a function at Vidyarthi Corner, Thekkinkkad Grounds. The
Minister for SC\ST and Youth Welfare, Mr. K. Radhakrishnan, will
preside over the function and the Minister for Agriculture, Mr.
Krishnan Kaniyamparambil, will deliver the keynote address.
A colourful procession will commence from the Indoor Stadium at
3 p.m. prior to the inaugural function. Caprisoned elephants,
Panchavadyam (Instrument Ensemble), bead-studded umbrellas,
tableaux and folk arts will add flavour to the procession. The
procession will conclude at the Vidyarthi Corner, Thekkinkkad
Grounds via Palace Road.
The venues for the cultural events, commencing at 8 p.m. on
Thursday, will be Town Hall, Regional Theatre, Mundasseri Hall
and Sahitya Academy Hall.
The Indoor Stadium will host the Volleyball competitions and the
Corporation Stadium will be the venue for football matches, both
beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday. On the following days, Model
Higher Secondary School, Thopp Stadium, Aquatic Complex, Jawahar
Balabhavan, Mannuthy Agricultural College and Christ College will
host the various cultural and sports events.
For the first time, an exhibition for the youth is also being
organised in connection with the State Keralotsvam. The
exhibition centre at CMS HS here is open to public on all four
days and will feature paintings, cartoons, handicrafts and
agricultural products, besides folk arts and awareness against
alcohol, drugs and suicidal tendencies. The centre will have a
employment guidance cell and will disseminate the information
about various health and traffic laws.
A host of folk arts, including kalaripayattu, chakyarkoothu and
folk songs, will be presented at the exhibition centre in the
evenings. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Ms. Rosamma
Chacko, MLA, at a function at the CMS HS at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
The function will be presided over by the Minister for Youth
Welfare, Mr. K. Radhakrishnan.
The chairman of the Kerala Lalitha Kala Akademi, artist
Namboodhiri, will inaugurate the painting exhibition. Various
artists from the district and other participating artists will
join Mr. Namboodhiri by drawing on the canvas at the exhibition
centre, the release added.
