CPI (M) denies ISI influence on Nepal Left

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 28.The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today took exception to an observation that the ISI could have penetrated into the Left Frontal organisations in Nepal, some of which were in forefront of the ongoing agitation there.

``It is wrong to say that the student's movement in Nepal, being led by the Left, has been penetrated by ISI'', the CPI (M) Politburo member, Mr. Prakash Karat, told The Hindu here.

He said irrespective of the provocation over the alleged remarks by the filmstar, Hrithik Roshan, there were a number of irritants, an apprehension of Indian domination and insensitivity towards Nepal.

Cautioning the Government over the manner in which it handles the present situation, he said whether one liked it or not a substantial section of the Left parties in Nepal did not agree with New Delhi's policies towards Kathmandu.

Without going into merits of the remarks, he said there were several irritants in Indo-Nepalese relations and the present issue required careful handling.

He said that whatever the cause that had led to the situation, there was need to understand that there was something deeper and the undercurrents in the relationship should also be taken into account.

The CPI (M) suggested that New Delhi should take the irritants and grievances of Kathmandu seriously and underlined the need to address them.
