Opposition attack repulsed in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, DEC. 28. Afghanistan's ruling Taliban movement repulsed two overnight opposition attacks in the north east of the country after five hours of heavy fighting, a Pakistan based Afghan news service reported.

According to Afghan Islamic Press (AIP), forces loyal to Ahmed Shah Masood launched an intense offensive with tanks and heavy artillery against the Taliban positions 30 km north of the Taloqan town in Takhar province. However, the Taliban was able to repulse the attack after five hours of exchange of fire in which three Taliban and six opposition fighters were killed. At least a dozen fighters of the warring factions were also injured in the clashes.

The Taliban control the Tangi Farkhar area where the fighting erupted on Wednesday night. The opposition has repeatedly tried in the last few months to dislodge the Islamic movement because of the strategic importance of the area.
