Fundraiser for AI bombing suspects

TORONTO, DEC. 28. Supporters of two Canadian Sikhs accused in the 1985 bombing of an Air India jet raised about 70,000 Canadian dollars on Wednesday for their legal defence at a fundraising banquet, according to a newspaper report.

About 300 people - mostly of Sikh heritage - attended the 100 dollars-a-plate fundraiser near Toronto's international airport organised by Mr. Balkar Singh Heir, an airport limousine driver, the newspaper reported.

Ajaib Singh Bagri (51), a mill worker and Ripudaman Singh Malik (53), a millionaire businessman, are accused of conspiracy in the 1985 bombing which killed 329 people.

The bombing of flight 182 is considered one of the worst acts of terrorism in aviation history.

The two men are also accused in the deaths of two baggage handlers at Narita airport in Japan when a bomb exploded in the luggage being transferred to an Air India plane. Both bombs are believed to have been placed aboard planes leaving Vancouver.
