BELLARY, DEC. 28. The Kannada University, Hampi, has decided to
confer the ``Nadoja'' (Teacher of the State) Award equivalent to
that of Doctor of Letters to the renowned Hindustani classical
music maestro, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and to the noted scientist,
Prof. U.R. Rao, during the current year's ``nudihabba''
(convocation) to be held in February next.
Dr. M.M.Kalburgi, Vice-Chancellor of the Kannada University, told
The Hindu that a decision to this effect was taken at the Senate
and Syndicate meeting held recently.
Dr. Kalburgi said for the first time, a scientist had been chosen
for the prestigious award. He said the ``Purandharadasa Sahitya
Peetha'' would be established at the university to make a study
of the Dasa literature, culture and tradition.
The State Government had released Rs. 10 lakhs for the
establishment of the Chair. January 24, on which day the death
anniversary of Purandharadasa, the renowned poet-saint and
``Father of Carnatic music'' was observed, was the date fixed
tentatively for the inauguration of the Chair.
