'Sonia should step down as Leader of Opposition'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 29. The Janata Party president, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, today demanded that the Congress president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, resign as the Leader of the Opposition, saying her continuation would weaken the fight against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr. Swamy said a strong Opposition was required to counter the RSS blitzkrieg and Ms. Gandhi could become a `major embarrassment' for the Opposition. ``She should step down so long as the cloud (of Bofors) over her family remains,'' he said.

The RSS was determined to secure an absolute majority for the BJP in Parliament ``so that the Hindu rashtra concept can be implemented.'' And, as per his information, the RSS planned to have mid-term Lok Sabha elections after next Deepawali.

Dr. Swamy also charged that the Congress president had gone soft on the LTTE and the party failed to bring a privilege motion against the Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani, for claiming in the Rajya Sabha that the CBI had asked the Sri Lankan Government to extradite the LTTE chief, Mr. V. Prabhakaran, even as Colombo denied that a request was made.
