EAMCET-2001 to be held on May 20

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 29. The Common Entrance Test for Engineering, Agriculture and Medical courses (EAMCET-2001) will be held on May 20, the Minister for Technical Education and ITIs, Mr.A.Rajendra Prasad, announced here on Thursday. The Minister also announced that seven institutions, including two private ones - the Vasavi College of Engineering and Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology - will introduce M.S. degree course in Information Technology from next academic year.

Talking to presspersons, the Minister said that the EAMCET notification would be issued after Sankranti. The date was selected on the basis of other key entrance tests in the country, including the Karnataka Common Entrance Test. The IIT entrance examination was scheduled for the first week of May.

The Minister said effort was on to curb delayed beginning of the academic year for engineering students and discussions were on with the colleges to either surrender the NRI quota seats left unfilled or hold on-the-spot admissions.

Counselling for EAMCET 2000 students was almost over except for about 600 vacancies, including 150 under sports quota (this is pending due to litigation).

He said a meeting of the private engineering colleges' managements and officials of the Technical Education Department and the other Government departments, which concluded here today, ended with the latter calling upon the managements to develop infrastructure and strengthen teaching faculty.

Concern was expressed at the lack of proper faculty, and ways and means to strengthen the area were discussed at the meeting.

The Minister said that regular audit of the college accounts would be conducted henceforth to prevent misuse of the levy amount. The Government had issued a GO relating to the levy of development fee on December 6 (GO Rt.No.950).

Accordingly, the managements had to open two accounts - Maintenance Account and Development Account. The Government would not object to the spending of development fee on procuring equipment, books and journals, acquisition of assets and on improvement of the faculty, but not on payment of salaries and remunerations to the faculty.

The Minister warned the managements to prevent ragging at any cost. He said the managements must fill all vacancies in teaching faculty with experienced hands.

Earlier, the Department of Technical Education decided to introduce two new certificate courses related to jewellery-making at the Government Polytechnic at Masab Tank. An MoU was signed by the department with the World Gold Council in this regard.
