Generate capital from non-conventional sources

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 29. The Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr. Digvijay Singh, has stressed the need for generating capital through non-conventional sources for funding railway projects.

He was addressing the top officials of the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division at the divisional headquarters here today. The Minister also held discussions with the officials.

The Railway Minister suggested that the tourism potential of Kerala should be fully exploited and urged the officials to take steps to improve the safety aspects of the Railways.

He appreciated the performance of the division in increasing the earnings despite being a passenger-oriented division.

Later, Mr. Singh cancelled the scheduled inspection of Thiruvananthapuram central railway station and its premises at the last minute. A Railway official said the Minister skipped the inspection as he was suffering from back pain. However, the Minister left for Alappuzha immediately on the car.

The local police and the Railway Protection Force turned away the mediapersons who arrived to report the visit of the Minister. The commuters and those who came to see off the relatives were also put to hardship by the restrictions.
