President greets nation on new year

NEW DELHI, DEC. 31. The President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, today greeted the country on the occasion of the new year.

In a message, he said, ``as the new year dawns, let us pledge to unite our endeavours for the all-round progress of the motherland and work for peace and goodwill among all our people.''

The Vice-President, Mr. Krishan Kant, said, ``the new year ushers in a new century where we, as a nation, shall complete the incomplete task of the century and fulfil promises of the new''.

The Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G.M.C. Balayogi, said ``the new year day is an important occasion when people make new resolutions and draw up plans for the times ahead. It is necessary to resolve to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor and to put an end to chronic illiteracy, ill health, unemployment and poverty.''
