Leaders extend New Year greetings

PONDICHERRY, DEC. 31. The Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry, Dr.
Rajani Rai, wished the people a happy, progressive and prosperous
new year.
In a message issued here today, she said the Union Territory
administration was giving priority to agriculture. The new year
was being dedicated to the cause of empowerment of women.
In his message, the Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, stressed
the need for unity among the people.
Listing out welfare schemes launched by his Government, he said
1,000 houses were being built in collaboration with the HUDCO.
Major health projects were launched and health cards were
distributed. A Rs. 234-crore water supply project would be
launched soon in collaboration with the French Government.
A separate cell had been set up to implement schemes under the
information technology.
Mr. Shanmugham said it had been proposed to construct sea ports
in all the four regions of the Union Territory.
The Centre had been urged to sanction funds for cyclone relief
measures.
The Tourism Minister, Mr. N. Rangaswamy, the Puduchery Makkal
Congress president, Mr. K. Lakshminarayanan, former Chief
Ministers Mr. V. Vaithilingam and Mr. D. Ramachandran and leaders
of different political parties also extended greetings to the
people on the occasion of the New Year.
Rally planned
A rally to highlight the virtue of communal harmony would be held
tomorrow (New Year Day) at the joint instance of Confederation of
Government Employees Associations, Progressive Writers
Association, All India Farmers Association, All India Democratic
Women`s Association, Democratic Youth Federation of India and
Students Union of India.
The rally would start from the Kamban Kalai Arangam.
Mr. C. H. Balamohan, president of the Confederation of the
Associations of Employees, would lead the rally.
A cultural festival would be held after the rally under the
auspices of the Progressive Writers Association.
