Two jute mill managers set ablaze

KOLKATA, JAN. 13. Two top executives of the Baranagar jute mill were burnt to death, a worker was shot dead, and four persons were injured, when labour unrest turned violent over the suspension of an employee today.

The mill's chief executive officer, Mr. Jagdamba Tiwary, and the general manager (personnel), Mr. Gautam Ghosh, were severely beaten up by a section of workers and burnt to death with flaming tyre tubes, the DIG (presidency range), Mr. Goutam Chakrabarti said.

Trouble started this morning when hundreds of workers gathered in front of Mr. Tiwary's office protesting against the suspension of two workers last Thursday and demanded their reinstatement. As the angry workers ransacked the CEO's office and beat him up, Mr. Tiwary fired one round from his revolver, killing a worker, Mr. Bhola Das, the superintendent of North 24- Parganas district police, Mr. Kuldip Singh said.

The mob then dragged Mr. Tiwary and Mr. Ghosh out of their offices, severely assaulted them and set them afire using flaming tyre tubes doused in petrol. The two died on the spot, the SP said. Four persons - three administrative staff and a security guard - were injured. Two cars were also set aflame, he added.
