Pollock, McKenzie hit centuries
CENTURION, JAN. 20. Powered by centuries by captain Shaun Pollock
(111) and Neil McKenzie (106) South Africa finished the first day
of the third Test at 375 for nine against Sri Lanka here on
Saturday.
Sri Lanka had made a good start to the Test, grabbing two
wickets in the first six overs after captain Sanath Jayasuriya
had won the toss and chosen to field first.
Jayasuriya's decision to field was surprising given that both his
leading strike bowlers, off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and
left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas, had been ruled out by groin
injuries.
However, in the fifth over Gibbs got an edge to a delivery from
lanky left-armer Nuwan Zoysa and was caught by wicketkeeper
Romesh Kaluwitharana for a single.
