Hossain nets two in Bangladesh's win
By Kamesh Srinivasan
LUDHIANA, JAN. 20. Mohammed Yamin Hossain was the hero in
Bangladesh's 3-0 triumph over Sri Lanka in the third Asian
Schools hockey tournament at the Punjab Agricultural University
ground here on Saturday.
He converted two of the team's first six penalty corners. Yamin
Hossain sounded the board in the eighth and 20th minutes to put
Bangladesh firmly in command.
However, the team was unable to convert its overall supremacy
into goals, and had to be satisfied with the swift reaction of
Mohammed Ashraful Islam who smashed home a cross from Mohammed
Hosne Mubarak in the 23rd minute of the second half.
Malaysia downs Singapore
In the other match, Malaysia perspired to a 2-0 victory over
Singapore to claim a semifinal berth.
Singapore goalkeeper Zulkarnain bin Salim was tough to beat for
the Malaysians. The latter were able to heave a sigh of relief
only a minute from half-time when Prabakaran Periyathamby
deflected a shot by Norhisham Saari to convert the team's eighth
penalty corner.
Malaysia scored its second goal in the 28th minute of the second
half, with Ikmal Abdul Jabbar cracking the board off a cross from
Mohammed Izwan Hassan.
With three teams having already confirmed their semifinal berths,
the race for the last spot will be between Uzbekistan and
Singapore, which meet Malaysia and Iran, respectively, on Sunday.
