Centre, UNICEF laud Pondy's record in execution of IPPI

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 21. The Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Rajani Rai, the Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham and the TMC leader Mr. V. Balaji MLA, today administered drops to children to prevent polio at a function held at Rajnivas, marking the inauguration of the Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) programme in the union territory. The staff of the Health Department and some high ranked officials were present on the occasion.

Dr. Thamma Rao, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services told the invited audience that as many as 97,500 children were being covered under the special drive undertaken by the department in cooperation with members of various voluntary and non government staff. He said on the last occasion of Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme (December 10) 1.03 lakh children were administered the drops. He said there was overwhelming response today from the mothers. In Koodappakkam, Muthialpet and a few other villages one could see mothers going to the nearest booth to derive the benefit of the programme.

He said the Prime Minister had sent a letter to the Chief Minister recording the Centre`s appreciation of the excellent work done by the Union Territory in covering all the kids (zero to five years) under the Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation programme. A report of the UNICEF had also made note of the fact that no child had been left out in Pondicherry.
