Woes of Bollywood

Sir, - The woes plaguing the Bollywood have been well brought out by you in the editorial ``More shocks in the script'' (Jan. 11) as well as by Surendra in his cartoon of the same day. The underworld dons have never hesitated to step into any field where the yield is copiously assured. The glitter and glamour of the tinsel world with its fringe benefits and the importance they come to feel and enjoy have drawn the dons to filmdom. The caution you have sounded should find its echo in everyone associated with the industry and everything possible has to be done to keep the Bollywood going on its own, rather than being coerced into doing things.

It is a fact that thousands make a living from film industry, apart from the upper strata in filmdom. If the industry finds itself in limbo, the lives of all those depending on the industry will be in jeopardy. Even as it is an industry involving investment of crores of rupees, it is also a combination of diverse art forms that make it really appealing. And no artiste can acquit himself well under duress, as the stress and strain will smother his creativity. Consequently, the product will lose its charm and glamour, making the situation worse. As one cannot expect the police to act without pressure being brought upon them, the entire film fraternity should come together and foil the designs of the dons. What they should learn from their experience is that the fate some of the film personalities have had awaits them too. As the situation that has come about is really grave, any kind of procrastination will be fraught with dire consequences from where a redemption will be really difficult.
