Range of building materials

IT IS necessary to have an updated database of the products and materials available for the professionals to finalise specifications for cost-effective options.

This directory is an attempt to fulfil the above objective by providing relevant information including products, related Indian standards and specifications and manufacturers in different regions to serve as a single source of information. This directory would have been more useful if the price list of the materials as on a particular date had been furnished by the manufacturers.

In the chapter on concrete, reference has been made to IS 456 - 1978 Code of Practice for Plain and Reinforced concrete. This code has been recently amended and published in July 2000.

This revision incorporates changes. In order to introduce in- built protection from factors affecting a structure the earlier clause on durability has been elaborated and a detailed clause covering different aspects of the design of the durable structure has been incorporated. In addition many significant changes have been introduced.

The general applications of the various products have been covered well.

The existing scenario of key building materials and their long term future demands have been discussed in depth.

The information contained in this directory has been incorporated as furnished by the manufacturers/suppliers of the products. It includes project range, potential applications in buildings conforming to standards and specifications.

A list of some important product-wise technological innovations made by research institutions backed by traditional knowledge base has been furnished. This directory will be useful for all those connected with building and infrastructure development.
