'Bangalore Bio.Com will redefine Indian biotech'
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, FEB. 12. With India finally on the fast track in the
biotech arena, Bangalore is set to repeat its success in IT in
this sector, the Secretary for Information Technology, Mr. Vivek
Kulkarni, said here on Monday.
He told presspersons that with an estimated market size
equivalent to $4.5 billion by 2010, the Indian biotech market was
set to compete in the big league. The State Government was
setting up an "Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied
Biotechnology (IBAB)" in collaboration with ICICI Ltd. to provide
training in bioinformatics, considered the fastest growing
segment in the knowledge industry, he added.
"Bangalore Bio.Com", from April 15 to 17, the first international
expo of its kind to be held here, would redefine Indian biotech,
Mr. Kulkarni said. It would have representatives from the
healthcare, bioinformatics, biofuels and genomics sectors, and a
large overseas presence was expected, he added.
Organised by the Vision Group on Biotechnology appointed late
last year by the State Government, and co-organised by Trade
Fairs and Conferences International (TFCI), a leader in
organising niche technology trade shows, Bio.Com was expected to
help Bangalore take a leading role in creating a fertile
environment for the growth of Indian biotech, the IT secretary
explained.
The Bio.Com conference would have key speakers from various
segments of the biotech industry including experts from overseas.
The participants would be decision-makers and influential persons
from the biotechnology industry and academia. The trade show had
been designed to attract the industry's key players for whom the
event was expected provide an opportunity to showcase and promote
the latest biotechnology products, technologies, equipment and
services, Mr. Kulkarni said.
