Task force for smoother traffic
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, FEB. 12.
The Delhi Government has set up a Task Force headed by the Delhi
Transport Corporation Chairman, Mr. Rakesh Mehta, for
implementation of a road development plan for the busy Vikas Marg
submitted to the government by the Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT) in 1998.
Other members of the Task Force include representatives from the
IIT, Public Works Department, Traffic Police, New Delhi Municipal
Council, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Industrial
Development Finance Corporation, which will fund the venture.
The report ``Road Designs for Improving Traffic Flow'' was
prepared by a team of transportation planners and engineers from
IIT Delhi, headed by Prof. Geetam Tiwari. It argued for
segregated bus lanes to improve the public transport service to
meet the increasing travel demand in the Capital.
Though one lane on the main roads of the city has been earmarked
as bus lane recently, it was not serving the purpose as other
slow moving vehicles quite often entered this lane, resulting in
disruption of smooth movement of the public transport buses.
``The Task Force would ensure that the concept of segregated bus
lanes becomes functional. And for this the Vikas Marg has been
chosen for the pilot project as recommended by the IIT,'' said
Mr. Mehta. The Task Force is expected to take a few months to
prepare a detailed time-bound report.
