'U.S. planes target Baghdad'
BAGHDAD, FEB. 16. Iraqi state television said Baghdad was the
target of a United States air raid this evening.
``Baghdad was bombed today by enemy American planes,'' it said.
``This aggression is not new. American enemy planes bomb Iraqi
cities daily,'' the television said without elaborating.
While incidents occur nearly daily between Baghdad and a U.S.-
British force enforcing no-fly zones over northern and southern
Iraq, raids on Baghdad are rare.
According to a AP report, air raid sirens wailed through Baghdad
on Friday night and explosions were heard as anti-aircraft
weapons fired into the skies. Witnesses did not see anything in
the skies, but the city was tense as the sirens started just
before 1800 GMT. The explosions from anti-aircraft weaponry from
the southern and western outskirts of the city began soon after.
Communication facilities near Baghdad were targetted, a CNN
report said.
