TDP will usher in development, says CM

By Our Staff Reporter

GIDDALUR, FEB. 16. The Chief Minister, Mr. N.Chandrababu Naidu, has called upon voters to elect persons fit to be leaders and parties that are devoted to development.

Addressing an election meeting at Giddalur today, he said peace and maintenance of law and order were important for development and asked voters to support their candidate, Mrs. Sai Kalpana Reddy, who according to him, was different from others by virtue of being a woman. He said the party had fielded her after careful examination considering the issues like poverty, backwardness, lack of irrigation sources and poor infrastructure that haunted the constituency. Though the family was reluctant to fight the elections after the death of Vijayakumar Reddy, the party leadership convinced them on the need to take forward the ideals of the departed leader.

Mr. Naidu assured voters that she would set right the house, saying development would be in proportion to the majority they gave to the candidate.

Mr. Naidu, who devoted most of his speech to explain the development plan of the TDP Government rather than countering the criticism of the Congress, said the Government launched a massive poverty alleviation programme with an outlay of Rs. 3,350 crores to uplift 40 lakh families.

On the power supply issue, he said the Government was serious about stabilising the supply. Despite the efforts, remote areas like Giddalur faced low voltage problem. He said the Velugodu project would change the face of the constituency, which had potential to provide irrigation to 3.30 lakh acres in 23 mandals of the district.

The daughter of late Vijaya Kumar Reddy, Ms. Archana, an engineering student, made and emotional appeal to voters to support her mother. The TDP district president, Mr. Kasi Reddy, the Minister, Mrs. Lakshmi Padmavathi, the Nandyal MP, Mr. B.V. Nagi Reddy, the TDP candidate and others spoke.
