400 milk co-ops run by women soon
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, FEB. 16. The Union Ministry for Women and Child
Development has sanctioned one more project to Karnataka to set
up 400 milk co-operatives run by women. The allocation for this
would be Rs. 7 crores, according to the Joint Secretary to the
Department of Women and Child Development, Mr. Dhar Chakravarthy.
Addressing a State-level conference of presidents of women milk
producers' cooperative societies here today, he said that the
department had so far sanctioned 96 projects, three of which were
in the State, and they were doing very well.
He said that the State's demand to improve infrastructure in the
dairy sector would be looked into and incorporated in the Tenth
Plan. The Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sugar, Mr. A.
Krishnappa, urged the Union Government to take up projects to
eradicate foot-and-mouth disease and also to introduce insurance
cover for cattle.
He said milk production had increased considerably, but there was
a lack of marketing facilities. If milk and milk products had to
be exported, then quality had to be given importance. He hoped
that the Union Government would assist such programmes,
particularly in providing disease-free animals.
