DMK and BJP
Sir, - This is with reference to the editorial `New
configurations in Tamil Nadu' (TheHindu, Feb. 8).
As the PMK's entry into AIADMK's alliance has tilted the balance
substantially in favour of the AIADMK, the TMC and the Congress
are yet to take decisions which will not only benefit them in
terms of number of seats but also defeat the communal DMK-BJP
combine substantially.
A third front, irrespective of its form and kind of combination,
will benefit only the communal combine. The TMC and the Congress
must draw a lesson from the last parliamentary elections, when
these parties drew flak in terms of seats. Going by the nature of
voting in the State, a third front will definitely be a non-
starter. If at all DMK is eager to win over the TMC, it can very
well go for the removal of the stumbling block and the only
irritant in the way of a DMK-TMC tie-up i.e. BJP's presence in
the DMK alliance.
On the question of some Ministerial berths at the Centre, when
the PMK can sacrifice its ministries at the Centre with an eye on
the Assembly elections, the DMK can also forgo the central
portfolios, which are of no significance vis-a-vis the retention
of power in the State. The DMK should also realise that the BJP
is not going to add any substantial number of votes to the DMK,
as this north-based party has no following in the State. On the
other hand the DMK will improve the BJP's strength in the State
with the help of its vote bank.
