Toonz plans travelling animation programme

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 23. The Toonz Animation India (TAI) plans to hold a month-long animation workshop for children here from May 1.

As part of the workshop, an animation competition is being held for those between the age of eight and 14. Contestants may send story ideas (each not more than two pages), along with character drawings. The entries should be submitted to the contest coordinator, TAI, Nila Building, Technopark Campus (Pin: 695581) here before March 31.

Participants of the workshop will be introduced to various aspects of animation. Cartoon classics will be screened.

Promotional films featuring the characters created by children are being planned. They will be sent to various animation festivals. Videos of these works, in the VHS format, will be up for public sale. According to TAI, Asianet will telecast these works.

Mr. G. A. Menon, chairman, TAI, told The Hindu that his company would break even this year, as had been originally envisaged. "When we planned to set up shop in the State, many had advised us against it. The company's growth has vindicated our choice to come here."

TAI is currently under contract to the Spanish company, Neptuno, the Italian firm, Rainbow, and the production houses, John Cary Studio and Children of Faith.

Negotiations are on with the VGI Entertainment for producing a 26-episode cartoon series based on a character, Tikkoo, developed by TAI. Zee TV has shown interest in another Toonz project, Cricket Story, Mr. Menon said.

"Disney has tested our talent and facilities," he added. "If we get to tie up with them, it will boost our image at the international level."
