Students stage demonstration
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MARCH 5. Students belonging to Veltech Engineering
College and Vel Multimedia today demonstrated in front of the
college in Avadi protesting sudden and steep fee hike.
The college management had put up a circular advising the
students that the fees for the next academic year would be hiked
from around Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 70,000, according to the students.
Of this, the students were required to pay Rs. 25,000 by the end
of March, they claimed. A sum of Rs. 10,000 was being charged for
a Computer course, but there were no staff allocated for this
course, the students contended.
Protesting this hike, a group of Veltech students (first, second
and third years) staged a demonstration right in front of the
college this morning. Some window panes in the college were also
damaged by the students.
However, the management maintained in its version that the
students protested against regulations to wear uniforms and bring
two-wheelers to college. According to them, the students
dispersed when they `realised that we will not bow to their
demands'. No police complaint has been registered in this regard.
