Enron issues must be solved: Wisner
NEW DELHI, MARCH 9. The former U.S. Ambassador to India, Mr.
Frank G. Wisner, today said all parties involved in the Enron
affair should resolve the thorny issues, as failure to do so
would send a wrong signal to foreign investors interested in the
power sector.
Speaking to reporters after addressing a press conference on the
outcome of the Indo-U.S. Business Council (IUBC) meeting here,
Mr. Wisner said the Central Government's willingness to pay the
first counter-guarantee sent a signal that ``India honours
contractual agreements. It shows that the original agreement
reached is working.'' However, the problems faced in the Enron
deal did not mean ``troubles in all foreign investments,'' he
pointed out.
Talking about lifting of U.S. sanctions, imposed on India after
the Pokhran nuclear tests, Mr. Wisner, who is chairman of the
U.S.-India Business Council, said he was hopeful that they would
be lifted.

negotiate with the multinational the project's capital cost and
power tariff with a view to getting them reduced.
The Committee was appointed last month to review power position
in the State.
Now, besides the Enron issue, it would also look into the tariff
rates, efficiency and functioning of the Maharashtra State
