PMO seeks report on 'manhandling' of airline executive

NEW DELHI, MARCH 9. Taking a serious note of reports in a section of the media, the Prime Minister's Office today asked the Delhi police to submit a report on the alleged manhandling of an airline executive by police personnel on the route the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, was to pass through in south Delhi yesterday.

The Delhi Police Commissioner, Mr. Ajai Raj Sharma, has been asked to submit a detailed report on the incident which occurred when Mr. Vajpayee went to the Siri Fort auditorium to watch `Shatroopa', a sound and light show on the occasion of the International Women's Day, PMO sources said.

Mr. Ajay Bhargav, executive with the Austrian Airlines, alleged that he and his parents were abused and manhandled by police personnel when he did not follow ``contradictory directions'' given by two policemen on duty. He also alleged that he was made to sit at the Hauz Khas police station for a couple of hours and forced to give a written apology.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (south), Mr. P. Kamraj, dismissed Mr. Bhargav's charges as ``baseless and motivated''.

``He misbehaved with police personnel on duty and refused to follow lawful directions given to him,'' Mr. Kamraj, who is submitting a detailed report to the Commissioner, told PTI.

``He was being very aggressive and abusive and as the senior officials were busy, he was taken to the police station to get his antecedents verified.'' Mr. Bhargav had given a written apology voluntarily, Mr. Kamraj said.
