Bangladesh to import maize from State
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, MARCH 9. The Minister of State for Food and Civil
Supplies, Mr. D.B. Inamdar, said in the Legislative Council on
Friday that Bangladesh had come forward to import 10 lakh
quintals of maize from India, including one lakh quintals from
the State.
He told the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. K.H.Srinivasa, Mr. B.S.
Yediyurappa (BJP), and Mr. M.P. Prakash (Janata Dal-U), who
sought an assurance from him about the measures taken to lift the
complete stock of foodgrains from the State, that the Chief
Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna, had talked to the Union Commerce
Minister to take it up under a special dispensation programme.
Mr. Inamdar said the Centre had received an order from the
Bangladesh Government for supplying maize. This was necessitated
as the Food Corporation of India had exhausted the amount granted
for purchasing foodgrains for the southern region. The Chief
Minister had urged the Centre to direct the Reserve Bank of India
to release more money for the purpose.
The Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation, Mr. H.K. Patil,
assured them that Mr. Krishna would himself give a reply to the
debate on fall in prices of agriculture produce, on Monday. The
Opposition insisted that the debate related to five departments
dealing with farmers' issues, and only the Chief Minister could
give the reply.
