Jayalalitha demands probe into purchase of tarpaulins
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, MARCH 9. The AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha,
today demanded an inquiry into the purchase of tarpaulins for
panchayat boards.
Noting that the government had permitted the panchayat boards to
purchase the tarpaulins, she said the Chief Minister, Mr. M.
Karunanidhi, and his ministers, were now blaming the panchayat
boards for the purchase.
The government had authorised a company operating in the name of
Global Industries to supply the tarpaulins. The tarpaulins were
supplied at heavily hiked rates, she alleged.
``After having issued orders to buy tarpaulins from a bogus
company, it is sheer iniquity on the part of the Karunanidhi
government to recover from the panchayat chiefs the amounts paid
in excess of the appraised value of the tarpaulins,'' she said.
