Plea for more time to get voters ID cards

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 9. Mr. A. Anbalagan, secretary of the State unit of the Puratchi Thalaivi Peravai, has said that the 8000-odd voters of Uppalam Assembly segment who have not been issued the photo identity cards would find it difficult to get the cards as the present special drive to cover all the voters within two days did not help the large number of voters.

He said that only two centres have been opened for the voters to get the cards after being photographed.

He said that there was unnecessary delay in getting the cards.

He requested in a comunication to the election authorities to extend the period or deploy additional machines for videographing voters.

The dates fixed for the special drive clashed with the Masi Magam festival (March 9). For constituencies having fewer number of voters (such as Rajbhavan and Bussy segments), the authorities had given three days time for the voters to get the photo ID cards.

Fixing only two days for Uppalam and Nellithope Assembly segments having comparatively larger number of voters would not serve any purpose.

Both the segments had nearly 15,000 voters who had to be covered for the distribution of the cards. Would it be possible with limited arrangements for such a number of voters to be served, he wondered.
